New Jersey Police See Rough Times Ahead By eric  |  Dated: 06-09-2010
newjerseyflag_160x120NBC New York:  Don’t think your trash collector or the worker fixing potholes is the only one in danger of losing his or her job as municipalities across the country deal with deficits and shortfalls.  Most New Jersey towns are struggling to come up with viable budgets and many of the men and women who are sworn to uphold the law are now holding up pink slips.  So far 67 officers across the state have been given their walking papers.  But more are on their way out the door.  Most likely, an additional 617 officers are looking at lay offs by July 1.

Based on the report, it appears that those slated for cuts are junior officers, a trend well know in the civil service sector.  Even officers out on medical leave are not safe.

More importantly, the idea that there will be less help on the streets as people become more desperate doesn’t make anyone feel safer.
