The Fort Wayne School District is cutting 91 teaching jobs next year and issuing a minimum of 284 layoff notices.

The state has reduced the public school budget by $15 million, and these teaching position cuts are a direct result. The layoffs will, however, give the district some flexibility when they need to assign teachers to schools that have been chosen to receive academic improvement.

Spokeswoman Krista Stockman said Fort Wayne principals will receive layoff lists today. They will then give letters out to the affected teachers and inform them that the school board will be discussing the list at a meeting to be held Monday evening. If approved, official layoff notices will be sent out on Tuesday.
