South Carolina Considers Cutting 2,300 State Jobs By victor  |  Dated: 03-10-2010
southcarolina_160x120A South Carolina spending plan set to begin July 1, which includes $337-million in cuts, would result in the elimination of nearly 2,300 public sector jobs, according to state agencies.

South Carolina legislators were given their first comprehensive look Tuesday on how various state agencies planned to deal with the funding cuts. Under consideration is the elimination of 2,287 regular, temporary and contract jobs, which includes 1,000 workers in the Department of Disabilities and Special Needs.

“This is what this budget is going to cause them to do,” Rep. Brian White said.

There are 62,000 regular, full-time workers employed by South Carolina. Legislators agreed to wait until next week to debate the budget in hope the U.S. House and Senate will agree to send more money to states that are struggling financially.
