Times Union Cuts 18 New York Jobs By Erik Even  |  Dated: 07-08-2009
albanytimesunion_160x120The Times Union, the largest regional newspaper for Albany, New York, announced the layoffs of 18 workers this week.

Fifteen full-time employees and thee part-timers were let go. Eleven worked in Editorial, including sports editor Bill Callen and business editor Marlene Kennedy.

The Albany Newspaper Guild, which represents half the paper’s employees, is alarmed that the layoffs came while it is still in negotiations with the paper.

The Times Union is a major daily newspaper, serving the Capital Region of New York. Although the newspaper focuses on Albany, New York and its suburbs, it covers all parts of the five-county metropolitan area, including the cities of Troy, New York, Schenectady and Saratoga Springs. The paper was founded in 1857, originally published as the Morning Times, and purchased by William Randolph Hearst in 1924.
