On Monday, October 7, militants assumed to be associated with the Muslim Brotherhood killed several Egyptian soldiers in an ongoing series of conflicts between Egyptian security forces and supporters of the deposed President Mohamed Mursi. Two people were also wounded on Monday when the same attackers launched grenades at a government-owned satellite station in Cairo. These attacks followed on the heels of a violent Sunday in which more than twenty supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood were killed in conflicts with national security forces and with others who disapprove of Mursi. There are concerns that there could be a full-blown Islamist insurgency incited by militants from Sinai due to increasing attacks on Egyptian security forces ever since the army takeover, and due to a perception of their increasing infiltration of the more northern areas of Egypt. The Muslim Brotherhood has alleged that the army had planned to remove Mursi by means of a coup. Army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi denied it, but is also quoted as having told President Mursi that Mursi had failed as a leader. Political tensions remain high after the Brotherhood was banned by a court in September, and as reports of similar attacks continue to stream in. Egyptian tourism has also been significantly negatively affected by the dangerous unrest.
