As the housing Market continues its drop, architecture practices are definitely feeling the pinch.
California based LPA opened 2009 by announcing it would lay of 30 people, reducing their staff by 12%. One month earlier, in Orange County, California, Mulvanny G2 Architecture reportedly cut 20% of its staff.
In Pittsburgh, Perkins Eastman, one of the largest practices in the country, cut 10% of its staff. It was the biggest cut in the company’s history.
Gensler, a US based practice that has 31 offices worldwide, also made significant cuts in its workforce.
David Gensler, executive director of Gensler, said: “We’ve weathered the downturn better than most so far, but we aren’t through this by any means. We’ll continue to struggle until the market starts to turn. We’ve had to lay off about 6-7% of our staff, and we’ve had some attrition. That will probably have to continue over the next several months. How far we will contract, I can’t say.”
