Veterinary Assistant, Animal Resource Laboratory','180000001J','!*!Pay Grade: 32The College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Veterinary Assistant for its Office of Laboratory Care (OLAC) unit. The University of Tennessee houses various species of laboratory and teaching animals across the Knoxville-area. These animals require care and enrichment to stay healthy. This position provides support to the OLAC to accomplish this goal.Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Enrichment- coordinates, provides and documents enrichment among various species. Enhances the program through regular monitoring of behavioral and enrichment resources. Maintains enrichment supplies, toys, and enrichment areas, ensuring good condition. Makes judgments regarding socialization needs based on behavioral assessments performed in conjunction with veterinarian.Rounds - performs weekly facility walk through, assessing individual animals, housing, facility cleanliness and order along with its structural integrity and appropriate HVAC systems. Schedules clinical veterinarian and specialty veterinarian appointments. Assists veterinarian and veterinary technician during dental prophylaxis on colony animals.Assists with quality control such as sentinel and environmental swab testing. Attends Continuing education, local AALAS branch meetings and assists with their preparation.Provides husbandry support in the lab animal housing areas to include cleaning, general care, feeding, bathing and exercising when necessary. Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements: General knowledge of veterinary medical concepts and terminology. Knowledge of animal behavior and animal husbandry. Knowledge of animal handling and proper restraint. Knowledge of various species' normal behaviors and anatomy; including rodents, pocket pets, dogs, cats, avians, poultry, equines, farm animals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Knowledge of Federal regulations relating to animals. Ability to adhere to hospital safety procedures. Ability to work in a high stress environment. Written and verbal communication skills. Time management skills.','!*!Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma with a minimum of one year of experience working with animals required. A valid driver’s license is required. An Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science or a related field is preferred. Experience working in a research setting and knowledge of federal regulations associated with research animals is preferred.Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8-5.
