Under supervision of the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program's Spay/Neuter Clinical Instructor, provide veterinary technical support to the instructor and students enrolled in the VMTH Shelter Medicine Rotation at Yolo County Animal Services (YCAS). On a daily basis, responsible for assisting with physical exams, anesthetic induction and monitoring, aseptic preparation of patients for various surgical procedures, student instruction, clinician support, and facility support.
-Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
-Handle animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
-Have contact with animals, including restraint of animals (sometimes fractious).
-Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, gloves, masks, and head covers.
-Stand, bend, kneel, squat, reach above shoulder level and move on hard surfaces up to 4-5 hours each day. Work Environment:
-Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, and cleaning chemicals
-Work with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.
-Work in high traffic areas, confined or small spaces, noisy environment and tolerate unpleasant odors.
-Have fluctuating break periods; work schedule may not allow a set break period time each day.

-Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License.
-Experience working in a small animal hospital or animal shelter as an animal health technician.
-Experience using safe animal handling techniques for a wide variety of canine & feline patients.
-Skill to assist in the performance of veterinary medical treatments and procedures.
-Experience in calculating and administering medications intravenously, subcutaneously, intramuscular or orally.
-Experience with animal restraint and performing venipuncture and placing vascular and urinary catheters.
-Experience in anticipating surgeons and patient needs during surgery and providing requested instrumentation and equipment.
-Experience with surgical asepsis and how it relates to direct contamination of patients, instruments and sterile supplies.
-Experience in surgical preparation and positioning of patients.
-Experience to determine physical status of patients, recognizing changes in patient condition and responding appropriately.
-Experience monitoring post surgical small animal patients.
-Experience to maintain inventory of supplies.
-Interpersonal skills to work with a diverse group of people, to include clients, clinicians, students and staff.
-Skills to follow written and oral instructions.
-Skills to maintain accurate medical records.
-Knowledge of basic canine and feline physical examination. Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience in preparing O.R. and related areas, procuring, setting-up and reviewing surgical and anesthetic equipment, instruments and supplies prior to and after surgery.
-Skill to aseptically scrub, gown and glove.
-Experience administering fluid therapy.
-Experience in providing technical support in the O.R. and related areas
-Experience handling complications of various surgical procedures; anticipating and responding quickly to surgeons and patient's needs.
-Experience in performing a surgical clip/shave, scrub without contaminating surgery site and transport/move patients to O.R.
