Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 25,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students from College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.

Essential Job Duties

This position supervises approximately 10 veterinary technicians that function in the Randall B Terry Companion Animal Medical Center (TC), the Health and Wellness Center (H&WC) and the Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center (


). The individual ensures that all patients in the centers will receive high quality care by managing, recruiting, hiring and evaluating all direct reports. Effectively plans, directs and manages day to day operations of areas of responsibility. Also functions as a working technician for the departments, providing unique internal customer service, anesthesia support, data collection, and patient care. Position is the primary point of contact for all activities relating to scheduling, patient care standard operating procedures, and staffing to ensure service area objectives are met and takes corrective action when needed. Position communicates with students, staff and clinicians to receive the most up to date information regarding presenting problem, diagnostics being performed as well as projected plan of care for the animal. Position works with small animal companion animals, exotic patients and equine and farm animals.

Participates in human resources related responsibilities, including but not limited to; recruitment and selection process; conducts performance management; ensures human resources policies and related information is shared with employees; resolution of disciplinary and grievance issues; monthly time sheets.

Proficient in usage of specialized equipment in both anesthesia support and patient post-operative care. Performs various technical procedures including; all anesthetic support from beginning sedation through induction, peri-anesthetic and post-operative recovery. Performs standard of care anesthetic monitoring, analgesic care, and every level of anesthetic care for all patients, including routine, critical, and emergent

Responsible for supervising, coaching, teaching, orienting and evaluating in the principals of Anesthesiology for all senior veterinary students as well as post-doctoral interns and residents.

Follows all radiation safety,


, and Environmental Health and Safety standards.

Manages resources, including budget and personnel; establishes priorities in the use of resources including space, equipment and/or facilities, continuing education budget, staff salaries, supplies and the fee structure for specialties to insure cost capture, industry equivalence and supply cost.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Departmental Required Skills

Equine handling experience.

Previous supervisory experience.

Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.

Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.

Ability to provide high-quality customer service.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.

Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem-solving and team advancement.

Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.

Ability to maintain physical work for extended periods of time.

Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high-quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

At least 5 years of previous veterinary technician experience.

Knowledge of administering anesthesia.

Experience working with small animals and comfortable working with large animals.

At least 2 years of experience as a supervisor in a veterinary teaching/specialty setting

Registered in NC as required by law to administer anesthesia.

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state Graduation from an
