Position Description

Responsible for the daily care of animals; provides appropriate food and water; grooms, bathes, and exercises animals; monitors the behavior and health of animals; reports health, behavior or temperament issues to supervisor; and performs general housekeeping of shelter.

Typical Duties

Assists shelter patrons, animal control officers and outreach staff with animal handling, intake, and evaluation, which often includes transferring and relocating animals to and from personal and department vehicles, cages and kennel runs; completes intake and care reports; maintains daily log sheets and inventories; and other record keeping as required.

Assists with medical treatments as directed, including euthanasia of animals; assists patrons and staff with disease prevention and reduction efforts.

Performs routine keyboard/computer operations on standard office equipment.

Responds to patron inquiries related to animal health education and related programs; provides humane education pamphlets or materials.

Supports and participates in departmental response to disaster and emergency events.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

High school diploma required.

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

Requires 1-2 years of professional animal care or animal control experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

Licensure

Must be a Certified Animal Euthanasia Technician (CAET), or obtain certification within six months of hire. NOTICE: State regulations prohibit anyone with a criminal conviction of any kind from obtaining CAET. Valid class D driver's license, use of personal vehicle, and maintenance of valid personal vehicle insurance as required by Tennessee Law.

Vaccinations

Must receive pre-exposure rabies vaccinations.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Preferred

Must demonstrate knowledge of basic animal care standards, including safe animal handling procedures for domestic and wild animals. Must demonstrate proper use, secure storage, and disposal of lethal chemicals, syringes and related equipment.

Metro offers a generous core benefit package to eligible employees who are regularly and consistently working 20 or more hours per week. Longevity: Annual bonus beginning after 5 years of service; increases annually up to 20 years

Other*: In-line-of-duty injury benefits, AD&D insurance, and Medical Disability eligibility after 10 years with Metro
