Position Description
The Seattle Animal Shelter is seeking an energetic, dedicated individual to join our team as a temporaryAnimal Care Officer. The Seattle Animal Shelter promotes public safety, animal welfare, enforces Seattle's laws regarding animals, administers animal sheltering and adoption programs, and manages a spay and neuter clinic.
Reporting to the Animal Care Manager, this position is responsible for providing quality care and sanitary housing for all shelter animals. The work of this position contributes to sustaining the shelter's current gold standard save rate for animals.
Job Responsibilities
• Rinse, scrub, and disinfect animal cages, hallways, floors, walls and isolation/quarantine areas; clean water and food dishes, and related kennel equipment.
• Answer questions, in person or by telephone from the general public concerning adoptions, redemptions, lost animals, impounding of animals, the operations and policies of the shelter, and animal control ordinances.
• Use a computer to input information regarding animals received in the shelter and to process adoptions and redemptions.
• Prepare food; feed and water animals.
• Receive and inspect animals delivered to the shelter, vaccinate if necessary, and record necessary information.
• Identify sick and diseased animals, taking precautions to prevent the spread of disease to other animals or humans.
• Identify and handle wild or vicious animals, using proper handling precautions.
• Notify pet owners by phone or certified letter of their pet's detainment.
• Assist in euthanizing animals.
• Counsel potential pet owners in selecting an animal of the appropriate size, breed, and disposition; explain responsibilities of animal ownership including the importance of proper care, feeding, grooming, and spay/neutering.
• Give tours of the animal shelter.
• Conduct educational activities and work with volunteers.
• Requires a minimum of one year experience in the care of and treatment of animals (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Work Environment/Physical Demands
• Must have the ability to care for and treat animals in a humane manner; deal courteously with citizens; carry out oral and written instructions; act quickly and calmly in emergency situations; perform strenuous manual tasks in the upkeep of the Animal Shelter; work in conditions of extreme stress.
• Frequent contact with hostile and abusive members of the public.
• Must be able to lift animals weighing at least 50 pounds.
• Required to work weekends and holidays for an indefinite period of time.
• Necessary inoculations for rabies, etc., are required and will be provided by the employer.
• Must stand, walk, bend and stoop to perform duties.
• Must be able to lift over 50 pounds.
• May be exposed to hostile or abusive members of the public.
• Exposed to noise, dangerous animals with a potential for attack and animal feces that may be contaminated with zoonotic disease transmittable to humans.
• Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
