Veterinary Technician Veterinary Technicians assistveterinarians with patient care, educate and train assistants and
interact with and educate clients. Responsibilities of job:Act as
extra eyes, ears, and hands for the veterinarians to ensure the
best quality care and to maximize the Veterinarian\u2019s productivity.
Provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service at all
time. This includes, but not limited to:Performing procedures that
do not require a veterinarian, completing prep work for procedures,
ensuring clients and pets are comfortable while in the hospital,
monitoring hospitalized pets, and keeping the hospital clean. Place
IV catheters, collect blood and urine specimens. Triage patients.
Educate clients about preventative care (heartworm disease,
vaccines, deworming, flea\/tick control), diagnosis or treatment of
pet\/livestock, and hospital services. Obtain relevant
information\/patient history from clients and maintain
proper\/complete medical records. Ensure safety of pets, clients,
and staff by utilizing safe restraining techniques, maintaining a
clean and organized hospital. Assist\/monitor in surgery as needed.
Mentor staff members. Perform other duties (Phones, year-end
inventory, cleaning portable chute, enter inventory, etc.)
Essential skills and duties Assist veterinarians with patient care
and medical treatments including but not limited to:medication
administration, vaccine administration, acquiring laboratory
samples, processing in-house and reference lab samples, anesthesia
induction and monitoring, intubation, dental prophy, surgical
preparation, hospitalized patient care, critical\/emergency care and
triage. Gentle and compassionate care of patients. Able to work
patiently with clients in varying emotional states. Check in
clients, take medical history, and obtain patient vital signs. Must
be able to administer injections, perform venipuncture, and
properly restrain animals, including fractious pets, for
examination and treatment. Technician must be able to give
treatments\/medications intravenously, orally, and subcutaneously
Fill prescriptions. Discharge patients, explaining any\/all
necessary instructions. Take and develop radiographs. Educate and
train assistants and caretakers. Client education. Cleaning the
hospital including but not limited to:laundry, floors, taking out
the trash and recycling, cleaning treatment areas, surgery, exam
rooms, kennels, bathrooms, and kitchen. Assist in
cleaning\/maintenance of hospital equipment. Answer phones and make
appointments. Relay appropriate information to\/from clients to
doctors and\/or management. Maintain proper documentation in the
electronic medical record. Assist in reception area if necessary.
Computer skills:Able to use Windows based computer systems, word
processing, email, web search and other skills needed to
effectively use the practice management software program. Other:
Technicians must possess good leadership, critical thinking and
problem solving skills, compassion, a positive attitude, excellent
communication skills and teamwork skills. Multi-tasking and
accepting constructive criticism is essential. Punctuality is a
must.
