The primary responsibility of the Laboratory Animal Research Support Specialist is to manage veterinary support of scientific protocols involving rodents and large animal species. This position is responsible for providing investigator research support to include surgery, anesthesia, postoperative care and managing rodent breeding colonies. This position serves as the department’s primary liaison for investigator research support needs in the current expanding research program.
Coordinate veterinary support of all protocols
Coordinate veterinary support of surgical programs
Coordinate veterinary support of imaging procedures
Advise investigators and program staff regarding procedural issues
Coordinate rodent and diagnostic sample shipping ensuring compliance with USDA and International Air Transport Association regulations
Ensure protocol adherence
Ensure necessary resources, supplies, animals and rooms are available for studies
Maintain surgical facilities
Collect and record experimental data for procedures
Provide postoperative care and monitoring
Oversee the coordination of animal procurement and receiving to ensure receipt of only disease free animals
Oversee quarantine programs
Manage preventative health programs
Conduct necropsies and collect biological samples for diagnostics to include parasitology, bacteriology, serology and histopathology
Ensure compliance with IACUC protocols
Interpret relevant policies and procedures for incoming investigators and staff
Conduct training of research technicians, faculty, and Laboratory Animal Services staff regarding utilization of research animals
Identify training needs of research technicians and faculty utilizing research animals
Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure accreditation and compliance with federal laws
Maintain detailed animal health and diagnostic test records
Maintain records in accordance with relevant agency guidelines to include the state of Pennsylvania, Public Health Service, the USDA, and AAALAC.

Required Education and Experience
B.S. degree in relevant scientific discipline with a minimum of 2 years of experience working with animals, anesthesia and surgical support OR
Associate’s degree with a minimum of 4 years of experience working with animals, anesthesia and surgical support OR
Certified/licensed veterinary technician with a minimum of 1 year years of experience working with animals, anesthesia and surgical support OR
AALAS LAT certification with a minimum of 3 years of experience in the laboratory animal field
AALAS ALAT certification with a minimum of 4 years of experience in the laboratory animal field
Additional Technical Requirements
Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills
Ability to achieve project objectives on multiple, complex projects running simultaneously
Advanced knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements related to animal care/use in research
