Small Animal Combined Soft Tissue – Orthopedic Surgery

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time tenure or clinical track faculty position in small animal surgery. The position is at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level, depending on qualifications and experience. Requirements include the DVM/VMD or equivalent degree and completion of an ACVS or ECVS residency in small animal surgery.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the departmental mission by participating in the teaching, service, and scholarship programs of the College. Responsibilities will include clinical, didactic, and laboratory teaching of small animal surgery to professional students, interns, and residents; presenting continuing education lectures at the local and national levels; providing mentorship to residents within the surgical program; and contributing to the clinical research program.

Faculty within the small animal surgery section currently include five ACVS board certified surgeons; four surgery residents; three neurosurgeons (DACVIM-Neurology); two neurology residents; two sports medicine specialists (DACVSMR); one sports medicine resident; three ophthalmologists; and two ophthalmology residents. The orthopedic service is a high-level referral center complemented by the Canine Arthritis, Rehabilitation, Exercise and Sports Medicine (CARES) Center. The CARES Center has a state of the art rehabilitation facility with 3 under-water treadmills, an exercise pool, a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, many wound management modalities, and a fully equipped gait analysis laboratory with kinetic and kinematic testing capability. Current equipment available for use in soft tissue surgery includes a new endoscopic tower, LigaSure device, and continually updated equipment for thoracoscopic and laparoscopic surgery. Equipment and operating space is also available for interventional radiology techniques, which are currently performed at the University of Tennessee.

The Small Animal Clinic is a modern facility equipped to provide state-of-the-art surgical and medical service, teaching, and research. The facilities and equipment of the Small Animal Clinic support 24 specialties and include surgical and therapeutic lasers, 40 slice computed tomography unit, MRI, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, video endoscopy, laparoscopy, intraoperative fluoroscopy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, arthroscopy, DEXA scanning, BioMedtrix total hip replacement systems (BFX, CFX), and a full complement of fracture fixation implants (Synthes LCP, LC-DCP and DCP , Kyon Advanced Locking Plate System (ALPS), Intrauma Fixin locking system, SOP, BioMedtrix I-Loc (Interlocking nail). Also available to the surgery clinic are a fully developed nutrition service, a regenerative medicine laboratory, critical care specialists, a veterinary social work program, an Instron materials testing machine, and an on site 3D modeling and printing laboratory.

The University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center is located in Knoxville, TN, in the Foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Knoxville was recently named by Trip Advisor as a “Top 10 Destination on the Rise.” It is a short drive away from the Great Smoky Mountains, as well as a number of dog-friendly state parks. It also offers a wide array of outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, and extensive road and mountain biking opportunities. Knoxville features a vibrant cultural downtown with excellent restaurants; a bustling farmer’s market ; a world class jazz orchestra; one of the nation’s most revered college theater troupes; frequent art and cultural festivals; and mens’ and womens’ sporting events.
