The University of Washington is a premier research institution with demonstrated commitment and successful in biomedical research. The Attending Veterinarian (AV) will serve a critical purpose to ensure appropriate animal care and welfare as the University fulfills its mission of teaching, research, and service.
The purpose of this position is to provide veterinary oversight and support for the animal care and use program at the University. This position performs a critical function to support excellent animal care and welfare within the context of the University's highly successful biomedical research program. The Attending Veterinarian reports to the Institutional Official who has ultimate authority over the program. The role of the attending veterinarian is a critical role in meeting regulatory requirements and ensuring that our program is in alignment with regulations and standards of veterinary care for all vertebrate animals that are used in research, teaching and testing at the UW.
This position routinely interacts across a wide variety of University stakeholders. In addition to supporting and being a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, the AV will interact and support Department of Comparative Medicine, Washington National Primate Research Center, Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities, and the research enterprise at large including Chairs, Deans, Primary Investigators, Laboratory Technicians and animal caregivers. The AV reports to the Institutional Official who is the Executive Director for Health Science Administration, who reports to the University Provost.
This position is multi-dimensional and requires knowledge and expertise in laboratory animal medicine in a complex, high-performing research institution. Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary to work effectively with animal care staff and members of the University research community. It is a required position within the University according to the Animal Welfare Act and our Assurance with the Public Health Service Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare. The Attending Veterinarian will work closely with the Office of Animal Welfare to meet these goals.
