SoBran is seeking a Veterinary Technician I - (NHP)
to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (LARC 11).
: Responsibilities of this position are that of a Veterinary Technician I for the NIH, Animal Care Project. These responsibilities include all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of on-site animals.
This position's responsibilities include:
Understand and follow all SOPs and Quality Assurance Standards
Assist veterinarian with examinations and procedures, and alert veterinarian of emergencies or animal problems
Administer clinical treatments as directed (Topical, PO, IM, SQ, IV, ID) to critical and chronic animals
Monitor the health status of all animals
Safely and correctly handle and restrain animals for observation and/or minor procedures
Collect and record physiological data (pulse, respiration, heart rate, body temperature, etc.)
Calculate drug dosages and administration frequencies
Identify and communicate signs of abnormal health and behavior in multiple species
Maintain medical records accurately
Assist the veterinary and research staff with surgical preparations and procedures
Collect, preserve and prepare blood, urine, stool, and tissue samples for testing and shipment
Place and maintain all forms and methods of animal identification in all species
Participate in all required training (topics may include: animal specific information and technical procedures, medical care, OSHA, regulatory, ASP support, and standard operating procedures)
Achieve and maintain a proficiency score of at least 95% within one year of appointment, and each year thereafter
Maintain breeding colony management and recordkeeping
Collect post-mortem specimens for shipment or evaluation
Supervise caretakers during weekend shifts
Participate in weekly technical or SOP training
Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned
All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned. Shifts typically occur between 6:00 am and 8:30 pm weekdays, and 6:00 am to 5:30 pm weekends and holidays. In addition, employees may be required to work beyond their scheduled shift or on non-scheduled days when unanticipated or emergency situations arise.
Employees' appointed to the position of Veterinary Technician I must meet one of the following standards prior to appointment:
An Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology
A Bachelor's degree in one of the Physical Sciences, Animal Sciences, or related discipline
A combination of work experience and/or AALAS certification may be substituted for a degree
Existing ALAT certification and complete LAT within 1 year of hire/eligibility required
2 years of experience as a veterinary technologist in the Laboratory Animal field working with multiple species preferred, will consider candidates with comparable experience and length of service in companion animal practice.
